Ten + Mixed Media Backgrounds

Hi Friends

This is my entry for the Create Something Catchy Challenges ............

and this too....................

Create Something Catchy have a very interesting theme this week , the challenge hosted by Pallavi Iyer

Here's the Challenge Theme - Create your own background. It could be on a card, layout or an altered project. No pattern paper allowed.Use tools like stamps, handmade or commercial stencils, paints ,watercolours, texture pastes, embossing or anything else that strikes your fancy and show us your creative experiments.

Here are few of my trials, I did quite a few backgrounds but was not able to finish all of them,  I do hope you'll like them....

This is done on the broken screen protector of my iphone, painted black, a coat of crackle medium and white acrylic paint on top, I plan to use this on one of my projects as a layer or mat or as a fridge magnet, who knows ............

gold spray paint, dry wall tape and homemade texture paste thru a  stencil on watercolor paper...........

Water colors and white paint pen.........................

Watercolors and white paint pen byCamlin..........only one color(Cobalt Blue) is used diluted to different strengths, layers can be built painting repeatedly after each layer dries...

Watercolours and Doodling with Camlin Paint marker in white .............

Camlin Photo Colors and handmade stencil with texture paste on watercolour paper............

Dry Embossing using a Tim Holtz STENCIL+ Distress Ink Walnut Stain ......and texture paste thru' Crafters Workshop Fancy Feathers stencil.............

Camlin Inks+ Crackle paste + stenciling.........................

Various Inks and the Doodle with a Uniball White Pen + a bit of glitter............

A tag with various Pearl colors applied randomly, a bit of dry glitter, another tag pressed on it and pulled apart..........it of course gives you a twin too..........amazing raised texture with the minimum effort .........

This one is a doodle on white card stock with the white Paint pen, then rubbed with Faber-Castell Gelatos and misted and wiped with a wet wipe....the paint pens have acrylic color in them and won't take color.....I love the subdued pattern here.............

Camlin Photo inks dropped on wet watercolor paper..........

The Kraft tag has a Gelli Print background made with acrylic colors and home made texture tools, the sentiment is a sticker, the flower cluster is a Rub-on+ white shadows with Uniball white, I punched some holes on top as I wanted some weaving kind of effect but later cut that portion .........

Watercolors.....layers built with different concentrations of color and a blue paint pen, free images printed on tissue paper and added with Gel medium , white dots are with white paint pen, tiny flowers punched out of cardstock, feather is stenciled and fussy cut on drying , edges colored with black acrylic to add depth and shadow...........

and now the ones I was able to finish..............

Fridge Magnet...on MDF base, Acrylic Color+ Crackle medium and decoupage Tissue, edges colored with Walnut Stain DI.

watercolor bookmarks with handwritten sentiments............simple backgrounds...need a twine on top....

This is the one with Camlin Photo colors background.......stamping with Prima Texture stamps and Black archival ink, some layering,a cute birdie stamped, colored with water colors and fussy cut, sentiment+ handmade flowers and white splatters...........

This is matted on bright Pink cardstock.......the following pictures were taken in very bad light...the true colors are in the pictures above............

The tag is finished with a wooden butterfly and a pearl and ribbon flower embellishment .....

The finished Art Journal page..................

The image is a digital image from Nicecrane Designs  printed on my laser printer and colored using coffee......matted on handmade paper......

some lace, stamping with white Gesso and the Hampton Art Stamp and bubble wrap, washi tape, bling on the background and glamour dust on the image later.............

The sentiment is stamped on tissue paper and adhered to a recycled cloths tag which is distressed using acrylic colors.  The flower is cut from old book pages using the Tim Holtz Tattered flowers die, the flower center is an epoxy resin handmade flower colored using some metallic paint. The dragonfly is an Mdf piece also colored and glittered.

some splatters using watered down Gesso to finish off.........

I really like the colors and the joys and happy memories of childhood and the association to simple pleasures of life this evokes !!

Tim Holtz Cling Mounted Rubber Stamp set - Butterfly Melange \
Uni-ball Signo 0.7 White Pen
old credit card
Paintbrushes
ranger Archival Ink -Jet Black

I started with a coat of Gesso on my canvas. followed by a few colors using the DecoArt Quinacridone Magenta, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, Phthalo Green-Blue, Titan Buff and DecoArt Media Misters in Shimmer Violet, Shimmer Yellow and Shimmer White and Rubbing Alcohol and the wonderful technique by Andy Skinner in this Video .

A coat of DecoArt Crackle paste ..............

Here is the wonderful crackle effect after drying ............

I used the Antiquing creams in English red Oxide and Patina Green to define the crackle.....some spray with shimmer sprays to adjust and balance the colors.........

I used the Boroque stencil and black Gesso to stencil the corner design in both the corners and Made to measure stencil by Andy Skinner to stencil the focal image ............

For the Imagine sentiment I have used the Andy Skinner Serendipity Stencil. I used the masking tape to tape the area and used a thick coat of black gesso , while the gesso was wet and with the stencil still taped in place I sprinkled the absolutely gorgeous DecoArt Glamour Dust -Crystal...........

I used an old credit card, some bottle caps and black and white Gesso to create texture and marks on my canvas..........

Used DecoArt Liquid Glass on IMAGINE and the clock ...and Crackle Glaze on the man.........

The liquid glass gives amazing dimension and dries clear to a glass like finish which is Hard, durable and non-tacky........

Here you can see the DecoArt media Liquid Glass and Crackle Glaze on the stenciled design. Clear Crackle Glaze is a fast-drying, acid-free topcoat that crackles as it dries to create an eggshell pattern in one step. Its clear finish allows details and colors to show through and it is self-leveling. Once dry, the cracks can be antiqued with Media Antiquing Creams or with Metallic Lustres.

I have used the metallic Lustre -Copper Kettle to define the texture on the man and on the corner stenciled flourishes. More layers and textures are added by stamping with Tim Holtz Rubber stamps, mark making with a used credit card and bottle caps with back and white DecoArt Gesso........

some close-ups.........

And the final step......two coats of DecoArt Media - Satin Varnish..............

I do hope you like this attempt by me and the step-by -step tutorial is helpful.........
